VMware Virtual Machines
December 7, 2006 | 2 Comments
Over the last couple days, I have been reformatting two of my main computers here at the office. It is a bit selfish of me, but they are the ones I primarily use..What I did on each of of them is set up Windows XP as normal. I loaded all the main programs, anything I needed for software development, and such. Then I installed a virtual machine.
What those are a like computers inside computers. It is almost like running two different operating systems at the same time. You open up this application, VMware, and load a new system in it. I works just like you were booting right up to it.
What I am hoping this saves on is the garbage Windows seems to randomly collect through everyday use. It will save on spyware and viruses. And I am hoping I won’t have to reformat as ofter!
I just wanted to share. If any of you have any alternatives, be sure to chime in!
Norton Ghost 10.0

I can’t tell you how many times I have run into a situation where a client’s hard drive crashes for one reason or another. And really, the preventative maintenance of something like that is pretty straight forward, but not too many people think about it.What happens is we get so caught up in spyware and antivirus software, that we totally forget about making backups of data. For example, I have all of my client’s record on one computer. What if that hard drive were to crash? I could do one of two things, start from scratch (which isn’t in the least bit appealing) or send the hard drive away to some lab and pay $600.00 to get the data extracted.
So this is more of a reminder that your information is precious, and with the right tool is pretty easy to back up. Norton Ghost does just that. It runs in the background as preventitive maintenance. It uses a very easy to understand interface and backs up your information onto a partition of your hard disk or an external source.
You don’t have to pay a lot of money for expensive off shore alternatives just to backup your system or your network. A lot of times all you need is a little piece of software!

Windows Live OneCare

A new product from Microsoft has just been launched! It is called Microsoft Live OneCare. Since it has been introduced, we have been testing it here at the office, and love the stability of it. Going on the Windows Defender knowledge (which is a great addition to any personal computer because of the spyware and malware tracking) we decided to try it out to see how it performed.
It is touted to be an all in one PC Care subscription, much like Norton or any one of the other subscription services you can purchase.
Some of the product features are:
- Regular scans and monitoring of the files on a computer
- A managed two-way firewall with ongoing policy updates
- Helps protect against spyware and other unwanted software
- Restores lost files and backup files regularly
- The 12-month subscription includes free phone, email, and chat support for up to 3 computers.
All in all, we like it. It is a good addition to any home computer and even some of the smaller business networks in use by our clients. If you are interested, just click on the image and read more about it at Amazon!
